23 People Hurt After Chartered Bus Headed to Brooklyn Crashes in New Jersey

Early Saturday morning, a chartered bus carrying 57 passengers overturned on Interstate 80 in New Jersey while on an overnight trip from Toronto, Canada to Brooklyn, New York. The bus driver, 51-year-old Neville Larmond, reportedly lost control of the vehicle about 25 miles away from New York in Wayne, New Jersey. The motor coach left the roadway and slid down an embankment before coming to rest on its side in the grass near Interstate Exit 53. Emergency rescue crews allegedly arrived at the scene of the crash to find 23 people injured, including three passengers who were pinned underneath the bus. Eight of those harmed in the accident were reportedly transported to Paterson's St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

The exact cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the New Jersey State Police. According to Sgt. Jeff Long, the driver of the bus told police officers that another vehicle cut him off immediately prior to the crash. State Police Officer Robert Cuomo stated the passengers involved in the crash were lucky the bus landed in the grass. Cuomo said if the motor coach had instead struck a concrete wall or other barrier the accident would likely have resulted in fatalities.

The chartered motor coach involved in Saturday's accident is owned and operated by AVM Max 2000 Charter Services Inc. According to the United States Department of Transportation, the motor carrier has received five safety violations since April 2011 and is allegedly no longer permitted to operate in the U.S.
