A 79-year-old man died in a recent motor vehicle collision on Route 312 in Southeast, New York. According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, the man was headed west on the roadway in the early afternoon when an 18-year-old driver who was northbound on Independent Way allegedly failed to yield and struck the driver's side door of his automobile. Following the traffic wreck, the 79-year-old was trapped in his vehicle. After a witness reportedly flagged down a Sheriff's Deputy for assistance, emergency responders from the Brewster Fire Department were tasked with extricating the man from his car. The elderly Southeast man was transported by ambulance to the Danbury Hospital in Connecticut where he later died. No one else was hurt in the collision.
The exact cause of the fatal accident is currently under investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. According to authorities, the 18-year-old driver who purportedly caused the deadly wreck was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
Unfortunately, tragic and fatal automobile collisions like this one can occur at any moment. Some common causes of deadly car accidents in New York and elsewhere include driver inattention, inclement weather, motorist impairment, excessive speed, and a number of other factors. Data compiled by the New York Department of Health estimates that about 1,500 people were killed and more than 15,000 others were hurt in traffic wrecks across the state during 2005, 2006, and 2007. In addition, men between the ages of 20 and 24 and all drivers over the age of 65 are apparently the most likely age groups to die in a New York automobile accident.
If your loved one was killed due to a motorist's negligent actions, you may be eligible to receive financial compensation for your loss. The spouse, child, or parent of someone who died in an avoidable traffic crash in New York may recover compensation associated with the cost of the decedent's medical care, lost benefits and wages, loss of consortium, and funeral expenses. A family member may also receive damages for any personal injuries suffered by a loved one prior to his or her wrongful death by filing a survival action. Because the amount of time during which you have to file a New York wrongful death or survival action case is limited, you should contact a skilled personal injury lawyer to discuss your claim as soon as possible after any loss.
